Membrane Fusion

Subcellular Biochemistry

Part of the book series: Subcellular Biochemistry ((SCBI,volume 11))

Abstract

Membrane fusion is an important biological process that is observed in a wide variety of intra- and intercellular events. Little is known about its molecular mechanisms and few of the factors which control it in biological systems are known. Even in exhaustively studied phenomena such as neurotransmitter release, or stimulus-secretion coupling in general, the molecular events that are prerequisites for the initiation of membrane fusion between secretory vesicles and the plasma membrane are not well understood. In this communication we shall review studies on the mechanisms of membrane fusion in biological membranes and in model membrane systems and attempt to bring out the critical elements of this process from among the diverse membrane fusion systems studied. We shall nevertheless emphasize the large variety of conditions under which membrane fusion can be induced in these systems.

This work is dedicated to Professor Zeliha Düzgüneş, and Professor Orhan Düzgüneş, on their 68th birthday.
