Methodological and Ethical Issues in Alcohol Research

Recent Developments in Alcoholism

Part of the book series: Recent Developments in Alcoholism ((RDIA,volume 7))

Abstract

A commitment to scientific endeavors is an important part of the healing mission and public apprehension derived from this type, of activity should not inhibit efforts to gain new knowledge. This imperative, however, does not dismiss the responsibility of every investigator to be deeply concerned with the morality of research activities and its impact on the health and welfare of the persons who participate as subjects. It was therefore considered important to review in this chapter some of the ethical principles that guide research, and in particular those relevant to research paradigms that incorporate the administration of alcohol (ethanol) as one of the variables.

“Everything has been said but it is necessary to be said again because some have not listened.” >—André Gide
