Abstract
Members of the genus Leishmania are protozoan parasites that exist as flagellated promastigotes in the vector for the parasite, the phlebotomine sandfly. Man acquires the disease when bitten by an infected sandfly. The life cycle of Leishmania is schematically depicted in Figure 1. Within man, the parasite is an obligate intracellular parasite of macrophages in which it transforms into its nonflagellated amastigote form. The amastigotes are found in phagolysosomes in the macrophage where they not only survive but replicate until specific immunity intervenes and activates the macrophage to destroy the parasite. For a more detailed description of the biology of Leishmania and the epidemiology and clinical aspects of leishmaniasis, the reader is referred to any of several surveys on the subjects, among which are Howard (1986), Molyneux and Kililck-Ken-drick (1987), and Neva and Sacks (1990).
