Equine Retroviruses

The Retroviridae

Part of the book series: The Viruses ((VIRS))

Abstract

The critical role of horses in the development of transportation systems and the economies of nations has historically maintained equine infectious disease research as a high priority in veterinary medicine. This research has produced a number of pioneering studies in the field of retrovirology that have not only led to improved control of retrovirus-induced disease in the general horse population, but also provided an important animal model for studying the epidemiology of a retrovirus infection, for examining the mechanisms of viral persistence and pathogenesis, and for evaluating various strategies for prevention or therapy of viral replication and disease. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current state of equine retrovirology and to identify significant questions that should be a priority for future research efforts.
