Abstract

The behaviour of inelastic cross sections by electron impact near the threshold of an electronic state is still poorly studied specially for molecules. The threshold region of an excitation process is often dominated by resonances (short living negative ion states). Slow moving electrons close to an excitation threshold cause structures to appear in the cross section curves due to the formation of shape, core/nuclear excited Feshbach resonances or virtual states. Often the electronically excited molecular states are characterized by large dipole moments and/or extremely large polarizabilities, causing resonances of different symmetries lying very close to each other and hence complicate the collision dynamics.
