Abstract

First notice of an adverse human health effect (occupational chloracne) of (TCDD) became known in 1957,1 evidence of teratogenicity in animals was reported in 1971,2 and the first international symposium was held in 1973.3 World public concern was raised in July of 1976 when a chemical company producing trichlorophenol in Seveso, Italy, exploded and contaminated the countryside with TCDD and other reaction products.4–8 Since then, other “accidents” or large-scale occupational and environmental exposures have been divulged or have occurred.7,9
