Abstract

Rodents first appeared in the Clarkforkian of Montana (Jepsen, 1937). The entire rodent fauna from North America during the Clarkforkian was comprised of members of the Ischyromyidae but showed an amazing diversity with as many as three subfamilies having been already differentiated (Korth, 1984). This implies either the origin and a very rapid radiation in the late Clarkforkian, or the origin of rodents on another continent (most likely Asia) and immigration of the stem ischyromyid to North America.
