Characterization of High-Temperature Superplasticity in Fine-Grained Zirconia

  • Chapter
Plastic Deformation of Ceramics

Abstract

There have been numerous studies on the high temperature creep and superplastic deformation of fine-grained zirconia doped with yttria1. The different experimental techniques available for characterizing creep deformation will be discussed, and the possible difficulties and consequent error in analyzing the data will be highlighted for conditions where the microstructure is unstable. Recent experimental results on the creep behavior of 2, 3, 4 and 6 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia will be presented (referred to as 2Y, 3Y, 4Y and 6Y materials, respectively), and the data will then be examined critically with reference to other reports in the literature.
