Abstract

Twenty five years ago, when the first polarized electron beam source in the United Kingdom was constructed (Campbell et al., 1971), the use of beams of spin-oriented electrons was generally considered to be a highly demanding and expensive technique, of interest only to a few specialist research groups. In the intervening two and a half decades, polarized electron beams have become indispensible tools in many varied fields, including condensed matter and surface studies, atomic and molecular physics, and nuclear and elementary particle collisions.
