Summary

In this article the application of the magneto-optic Kerr effect to the study of the magnetic properties of ultrathin metallic structures prepared by molecular beam epitaxy is described The differing magneto-optical effects which arise according to the geometrical orientation of the magnetisation with respect to the scattering plane are first considered and experimental arrangements for their measurement described. In-situ measurements of the evolution of magnetic order (the two dimensional magnetic phase transition) and of the evolution of magnetic anisotropies are discussed, illustrated by results for Co/Cu(001) and Fe/GaAs(001) epitaxial overlayer systems during the film growth. Finally, it is demonstrated that it is possible to make vectorial magnetometry measurements using the longitudinal Kerr effect in different applied field configurations and to determine the magnetic anisotropy and interlayer exchange coupling strengths using polar MOKE.
