Abstract

Triterpenoid and steroid saponins are widely distributed in nature and comprise a great variety of different structure types due to the individual aglycones. A lot of medicinal plants have been found to contain saponins which not only have complex structures but also show a broad spectrum of biological activities. These highly polar glycosides occur in some important traditional Chinese medicines such as ginseng (Panax ginseng),South China ginseng (P. notoginseng),licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), Astragalus membranaceus,Liriope japonica andPolygonatum kingianum.
