Summary
The development of a method for the analysis of a specific, or group of specific analytes, in a complex matrix is difficult. Problems arise due to the large number of interfering substances present and because the analyte of interest is often only present at low concentrations. Column switching techniques have been commonly used to solve this type of analytical problem. As the number of different processes whereby the separation of sample components may be achieved increases the ability to handle complex samples likewise increases. As there are a large number of different parameters that require either complete or partial optimisation a significant demand is placed on the method developer.
The environmental impact of petrochemicals is accepted, their role in the initation of cancer has been clearly shown. The analysis of petrochemicals, and the product formed through chemical or combustive modification, for the specific carcinogenic substances is thus of importance. Procedures whereby the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in petrochemical samples, of varying complexity, may be analysed are discussed. Each sample, having different properties, gives different problems which require different column configurations.
