Phytoactive Polymers: New Synthetic Plant Growth Regulators

Morphogenesis in Plants

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 253))

Abstract

Endogenous plant substances play an important role in plant life. Phytohormones (including the most extensively studied auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene and its precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid) as well as other substances, (particularly fusicoccin, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, aliphatic polyamines and plant cell wall oligosaccharides), are involved in the endogenous regulation of plant growth (Chailahyan, 1982; Kogl, 1934; Nickell, 1982; Tran Thanh Van et al., 1985). All of the above biologically active substances are low molecular weight substances that belong to different classes of organic compounds, namely carboxylic acids (e.g. auxins, gibberellins, abscisic acid), 6-N-substituted adenins (cytokinins), steroids (brassinosteroids), etc.
