Abstract

It gives me great pleasure to dedicate this paper to Larry Biedenharn on his 70th birthday. As Chairman of the International Colloquium on Group Theoretical methods in Physics for some years now, Larry has been able to oversee the continued growth of group theory as a theoretical tool in physics, and indeed by his own efforts has made a not unsubstantial contribution to that growth. His most recent interest has been in the area of the so-called quantum groups; much of what I have written in this article has been influenced by his work in that domain.

Talk presented at the symposium SYMMETRIES IN SCIENCE VI: From the Rotation Group to Quantum Algebras, in honour of the 70th Birthday of Professor L. Biedenharn, in Bregenz, Austria, 2-7 August 1992
