Abstract
Epidemiology is, by definition, the study of epidemics. We study the differences in the frequency of a disease in a defined population in relationship to time, place, geography and the characteristics of the population. Identification of an epidemic then leads to specific analytical studies to determine the “causes of the epidemic” and, subsequently, and most importantly, the best methods for prevention of disease.
