Abstract

Interleukins are a family of communication molecules that play a critical role in the differentiation and maturation of effector immune responses. Several of these molecules are pleiotropic with regard to cells of origin and targets for their effects. To date, eight interleukins (IL-1 through IL-8) have been identified and I believe many more will be discovered. Most of the interleukins have been purified to homogeneity, sequenced, gene cloned, and their cDNA expressed in Escherichia coli. Furthermore, their receptors have been purified and sequenced and their genes have been cloned. Because of these developments, their biological properties are better defined. It is almost impossible to review the properties of each of the interleukins, therefore I will review only IL-1, IL-2, and IL-6 because of their possible role in autoimmune diseases. Not to say that other interleukins play no role in autoimmune diseases, but they have not been extensively studied in relation to autoimmune diseases. Some of these interleukins have been recently reviewed (Gupta, 1985, 1988; Oppenheim et al., 1986; Dinarello, 1988; Zvaifler and Firestein, 1988; Kishimoto, 1989).
