Preventing AIDS in Female Adolescents

  • Chapter
Women at Risk

Abstract

The increasing incidence of HIV infection is having a pervasive cultural impact among adolescents in the United States. To be sure, adolescents currently represent fewer than 1% of all reported AIDS cases in the United States [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1993b]. But this statistic underestimates the potential for HIV infection among adolescents. Young adults in their 20s constitute about 20% of all AIDS cases (1993b), and because several years typically elapse between the time a person is infected with HIV and the appearance of clinical signs sufficient to warrant a diagnosis of AIDS, many of these individuals were infected during adolescence.
