Abstract

If there is one word that peppers any discussion of asthma, it is complex. The term repeatedly reappears throughout recent discussions of the disorder, whether it occurs in proposing how to define the condition or in describing the pathophysiology of the condition. Furthermore, it is a rare conversation among scientists who investigate asthma, especially those who have studied the disorder for a period of time, that does not end with participants shaking their heads and muttering something about how complex asthma seems to have become. Readers will come to appreciate this complexity during the following brief discussion of three topics: definition of asthma, characteristics of the disorder, and model of pathophysiology.
