Abstract
As elaborated in Chapter 7, ForestCo’s managers used two primary approaches to staffing: administered appointments and posting. In the posting procedure, the requirements of vacant positions were posted at various locations throughout the corporation and qualified candidates were invited to apply. Administered appointments were those that did not use posting. Typically, administered appointments were made by the manager immediately responsible and accountable for the performance of the person appointed to the vacant position. We argue that administered staffing was used primarily as a means of managing mobility along lines of progression, especially when the details of both vacant jobs and candidates were relatively well known.
