Pesticide Exposure: Overview of the Tier Approach

The tier approach which is presented here is intended as a scheme by which the hazard encountered by pesticide handlers (mixers, loader and applicators) can be assessed. Figure 1 illustrates the tiered approach under discussion. The first step in this process involves the establishment of an allowable occupational exposure level (AOEL). This value is derived in the same way as most other acceptable exposure levels, e.g., dietary (ADI) or occupational (TLV) etc. Therefore the AOEL is a number calculated from the toxicology data base by the use of an appropriate margin of safety.
