Abstract
Over the past two decades, substantial research has documented the interrelation of different problem behaviors (Elliott, Huizinga, & Menard, 1989; Hawkins, Jenson, Catalano, & Lishner, 1988; Jessor & Jessor, 1977; Zabin, Hardy, Smith, & Hirsch, 1986). The research has shown strong linkages among characteristics such as drug use, delinquency, and aggression. For instance, Jessor and colleagues maintain that such behaviors as delinquency and drug use represent different aspects of problem behavior. Despite these advances, little evidence has been obtained with respect to the determinants of different components of problem behavior. These outcomes have been studied separately rather than simultaneously. Therefore, whether or not these outcomes share similar risk factors is not well documented. Identification of the shared and unshared patterns of different behaviors remains a central task. Such information is critical to the emerging field of developmental psychopathology in its goal to describe the etiology of different problem behavior outcomes, their various pathways, and eventually developmental sequelae.
