Learning appropriate and socially acceptable toileting practices is one of the major tasks of the preschool years, and problems with toileting are among the most common causes of concern to parents. Chamberlain (1974) surveyed 200 parents of preschoolers about their concerns regarding their children and found that toilet training was the most commonly reported worry. Pediatric psychologists report that between 5% and 10% of their referrals from parents concern problems with toileting and toilet training (Roberts, 1986).
