Abstract

Learning problems in preschoolers generally separate into two categories. First are the global disabilities in cognitive processing that are labeled mental retardation or developmental disabilities and that usually manifest themselves fairly early in the child’s life and affect a broad range of cognitive skills. Second are the more specific and limited learning problems that affect only a narrow range of cognitive tasks and are usually not detected until the child enters an organized academic environment. These are labeled specific learning disabilities.
