Casting about for a shred of inspiration to fire up this chapter, I began thumbing through some old archaeological reports of the 1930s and found that there are only a few compared to today’s output. The ones I looked at left me pleasantly surprised. The text, the style, a great deal of hypothesizing, and the seemingly precocious conclusions were sharp, perceptive, and amazingly accurate, even when judged by the standards of our present enlightenment.
