Abstract

Chapter 4 examined the expectancy of control, the first of two hypothesized distal mediators of LH effects. This chapter focuses on the second distal mediator: emotional arousal. In my conceptualization of human LH, emotion serves to sustain and augment the effects of helplessness training on coping and task performance. Emotion is evoked by helplessness training as an adaptive device that motivates the person to undertake the coping activities cued by the expectancy of control. Emotion is an important part of the coping process: It strengthens the link between expectancy and the person’s chosen coping strategies, and it indirectly contributes to task performance via the coping activities that it reinforces and sustains.
