Preparation and Properties of α/β SiAlON Composites

Abstract

The results of a phase relations study in the Y-Si-Al-O-N system within the Si3N4 — SiAl2O2N2 — YA13N4 plane are presented. It is shown that within this plane close to the Si3N4 corner α and β SiAlONs coexist at equilibrium with minor amount of glass phase. The α/β ratio in this field is controlled by Y concentration. It was found that properties of α/β composite materials such as density, hardness, toughness and microstructure depend on α/ β ratio.
