Abstract

Hospital inpatient services have, for decades, been a familiar component in the delivery of psychiatric care to children in large urban areas in the United States. The acute, seriously disturbed child is admitted to such services for his or her safety, the intensive and rapid diagnostic workups provided by multidisciplinary professional staffs, and the diverse therapeutic interventions that can be initiated. Moreover, as with other medical specialties, the inpatient unit plays an important role in research and professional training.
