Abstract

In lower animals, the role of hormones in reproduction is fundamental. In humans, however, sexual behavior appears to be multidetermined, and it involves a complex interaction not only of hormones but of environmental and social learning factors as well. In this chapter, the elementary physiology of sex hormone production in humans will be outlined, followed by a review of the effects of these hormones on normal human sexual development, adult sexual behavior, and aggressiveness. Finally, the evidence for endocrinological abnormalities in individuals who have committed various types of nonsexual as well as sexually motivated assault will be scrutinized.
