Abstract

When the children of immigrant families reach the age at which they enter the school system, their learning needs are clearly different from those of their monolingual schoolmates. Although legislation in several countries requires school systems to provide linguistically diverse children with an education appropriate to their needs, there still seems to be a lingering doubt as to the value of such special educational programs, probably as a result of the fact that it has often proven difficult to implement them in a pedagogically adequate fashion.
