Abstract
The experiment we are reporting on has been conducted in a number of French pre-elementary and elementary schools near Paris and Marseilles and has become normal pedagogical practice for most of the teachers involved in the matter. Although it can by no means be considered representative of prevalent trends in present-day French education, I do not intend to contrast it with the various reading methods most frequently employed or to engage in a discussion of their comparative merits, since my purpose is not to start any kind of controversy.
