Evaluation of Text Reading Comprehension

Results of a Research at the End of Primary School and in Junior High School

Abstract

The research presented in this chapter aims at evaluating the text reading comprehension abilities of students at the end of primary school and in junior high school in the city of Montreal. This evaluation is performed by means of a test developed according to the standard procedure of test construction (Anastasi, 1976). First it is important to state explicitly the objectives to be attained by the research, because they strongly contribute to determine the nature of the test developed. The version of the test experimented is then presented. The general results obtained from the analysis made of the experimental data constitute the third part. The conclusions reveal what this first phase of the research permitted us to learn about the development of a test to evaluate reading comprehension, and they emphasize the most significant observations on the comprehension abilities of the students.
