A therapist’s illness brings up fears of separation and abandonment. When the ill therapist cancels sessions, patients may fantasize that the therapist will never return. Or if he does, he will not be able to handle a full practice. And patients may wonder if they will be among those chosen or eliminated in the reduced case load.
