Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

  • Chapter

Abstract

In the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III; APA, 1980), the official diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is listed among the anxiety disorders. Requisite for the diagnosis of this disorder are the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions. Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts or images experienced as intrusive, unwanted, and senseless. They are recognized by the person as a product of the mind, and as not being imposed externally on him or her. Typically, the individual attempts to ignore or suppress them. The most common obsessions include repetitive thoughts of violence, contamination, and doubt.
