Laboratory Tests for Human T-Lymphotropic Virus Type I

In 1978, the first human retrovirus was isolated from the lymphocytes of a patient in the United States with a mature T-cell malignancy (Poiesz et al. 1980). This virus is now known as human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). In 1980, serologic tests revealed that almost 100% of sera collected from patients with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) in Japan were positive for HTLV-I antibody (Kalyanaraman et al. 1982a; Robert-Guroff et al. 1982). Subsequently, other areas endemic for HTLV-I infection were found, including the Caribbean Islands (Catovsky et al. 1982; Gallo et al. 1983a), the southeastern United States (Blayney et al. 1983), parts of South America (Gallo et al. 1983a; Robert-Guroff, 1984), parts of southern Italy (Manzari et al. 1984) and many locations in Africa (Hunsmann et al. 1983); Saxinger et al. 1984). HTLV-I infection in theses areas is associated with 50–70% of all lymphoid leukemias of adulthood.
