Abstract

Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is being increasingly used for the treatment of upper urinary stones (1). The details of the mechanism of stone fragmentation are still, however, unclear. Exposed stone surfaces provide the opportunity to study the internal structure of urinary stones and to understand the mechanisms of stone fragmentation by shock waves. This paper presents a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) study of the stone fragments passed by patients after ESWL.
