Abstract

During the last four years, we have treated approximately 5000 patients for kidney or proximal ureter stones using extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). For this procedure, our preference is peridural anesthesia (PDA). However, local anesthesia is used where indicated (1, 2). During this period, we have tested the various effects of three different drugs for PDA. These include: Bupivacaine-HCl (BU), 0.5% (Fa. Woelm Pharma); Bupivacaine-CO2 (BU-CO2), 0.5% (Fa. Woelm Pharma); and Prilocaine, 1.5% (Fa. Astra Chemicals).
