Risk of Stone Formation in Rock-Phosphate Mine Workers

Abstract

Environmental factors play an important role in many metabolic diseases including urolithiasis. Udaipur is one of the several pockets of India having a high prevalence of urolithiasis. It is a mineral-rich belt with a large number of rock phosphate, marble, soap stone, zinc, cadmium, silver, and graphite mines. Our preliminary survey (unpublished data) indicated a higher incidence of stone disease in miners as compared to the over-all prevalence. This prompted us to carry out this study in Matoon Mines which is an open cast rock-phosphate mine.
