Epidemiology of Stone Disease in the United States as Discerned from a Stone-Risk Profile

Epidemiologic surveys of nephrolithiasis have indicated that the southeastern United States is a region of relatively high stone incidence. This region has thus been designated the “stone belt” (1). Previous studies, however, lack comprehensive biochemical profile data on stoneforming patients in various regions to determine whether differences in metabolic and environmental risk factors account for the apparent high rate of stone formation in the stone belt.
