Comparison of Urine Composition in Male Patients Forming Calcium Stones of Different Types

Stone formation is considered to be determined by a combination of several etiological factors, such as supersaturation and activity of promoters and inhibitors (1). Calcium oxalate (CaOx) is the main component of renal stones in industrialized countries. If insensitive analytical methods are used, many of these stones may be considered as “pure” CaOx although as much as 20% w/w may be calcium phosphate (CaP) (2). We use a sensitive wetchemical method for analysis of urinary calculi (3). In this study, we compare urinary excretions and concentrations of components suspected to affect stone formation in male patients forming calcium stones of different composition. We also compare these stone patients with a reference group of non-stone-formers.
