Kinetic Quantification of Crystal Growth in Gel Matrices: An Efficient Model of Urinary Stone Formation

  • Chapter
Urolithiasis

Abstract

Conventional methods used to determine the growth rates of crystal phases which are relevant to urinary stone formation show a number of shortcomings (1). Most of them are time-consuming and require a large test volume. Often, urine has to be highly diluted in order to test the so-called inhibitory activity because a direct application of methodology to undiluted urine is not possible. Results obtained in this way are of questionable physiological relevance.
