Increased Dietary Calcium Intake Reduces Urinary Oxalate Excretion in Healthy Adults

Urinary oxalate excretion is known to fall as dietary Ca intake increases (1). During studies of the role of serum 1,25(OH)2D in regulating Ca metabolism, we observed that daily urinary oxalate excretion (UoxV) averaged 0.31±0.08 (±SD) mmol/day among 34 healthy adults fed diets providing normal amounts of Ca (22.1±4.8 mmol/day) and that UoxV was significantly higher, averaging 0.45±0.09 mmol/day (p<0.001) among 24 healthy adults fed low Ca diets (4.4±0.7 mmol/day).
