The Calciuretic Effect of Methionine in Humans

Abstract

It has been recognised for some time that a high animal-protein diet leads to hypercalciuria, particularly in young adults. The relatively high proportion of sulphur-containing amino acids in meat is thought to be one of the main factors involved. In this study the effect of a high methionine diet was studied on urinary calcium excretion and on the renal tubular reabsorption of calcium.
