Abstract
Urolithiasis is a major health-care concern in Saudi Arabia where calcium oxalate (CaOx) or mixed CaOx stones form the major proportion of stones that are found. In order to understand what factors might contribute to the high incidence of CaOx-type stones, metabolic investigations were carried out in a population of over 270 patients (SF) and normal subjects (NS) from the Middle East (80% Saudi Arabian). This was done during conditions of fast and while subjects were consuming their self-chosen diets, with particular attention being focused on urinary Ca and oxalate.
