Abstract

To the extent that psychopathology illuminates the subtle healthy processes of development, the gender identity disorders teach us about the most fundamental aspects of our sexual selves. Suffering and lost potential abound among the gender-disordered, but so do courage, determination, and triumph of the belief in self-expression.
