Deviation from Linearity of the Cu-O Chains in Orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O7 by High-Resolution Neutron Powder Diffraction

Abstract

The structure of orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O6.91 (Tc=90K) was refined from high-resolution data (sinθ/λ)max=0.91\(\dot A\) −1) in the temperature range between 5K and 320K. The oxygen atoms on the so-called linear Cu-O chains occupy potential minima which are displaced from the chain axis along [100] by at least 0.08(1)\(\dot A\) at all temperatures. The Cu-O-Cu bond angle of the resulting Cu-O zig-zag chains, α=175(1)°, does not vary significantly as a function of temperature below Tc.
