Abstract

In this overview I will discuss the principal theoretical ideas proposed for the mechanism of superconductivity in the oxide metals, their chief shortcomings and some of the experimental results which relate one way or the other to them.

  32. a) the calculation of the resistivity due to holon-spinon scattering yields T3/2 in 2 dimensions rather than T, (C. Kallin and A. J. Berlinsky, Preprint). (b) the resistivity along the c-axis becomes increasingly parallel to that in the plane for better samples. See for instance, S. Martin et al. (Preprint). (c) the linear specific heat coefficient (as well as the slope of the linear resistivity) bear little relation to Tc. In one recent measurement (M Kato, Y. Maeno and T. Fujita, Physica C152,116 (1988) the specific heat coefficient decreases in La2-XSrxCuO4 in going into the superconducting phase and is maximum in the “spin glass” phase (G. Aeppli, Private Communication). The thermal conductivity of many samples with linear specific heat is close to T2 (Nunez-Ruggeiro et al. (Preprint), J. Graebner et al., (Preprint), E. Abrahams and C. M. Varma (Preprint)) suggesting a glassy explanation. (d) the tunneling curves in many instances show a BCS like spectrum. This is seen also in Andreev reflection measurements. See for instance, H. F. C. Hoovers et al. C152,105 (1988). (e) the symmetry assumed for the gap function to explain the structural transition does not appear to be any of the solutions of the mean field theory, for example Affleck and Marston - Ref. 19.
