The Ultrastructure of Sensory Nerve Endings in the Penis of the Goat

Summary

The penis of the male goat belongs to the fibro-elastic type. Its main components are the corpus cavernosum surrounded by a thick tunica albuginea. At the basal aspect of the corpus cavernosum lies the urethra. The urethra leaves the penis with its connective tissue sheath at the border between corpus and glans penis to form the processus urethrae which is about 2,5 cm long. Three types of nerve endings were observed: 1. free nerve endings, 2. Ruffini corpuscles and 3. genital corpuscles. The free nerve endings occur within all layers of the connective tissue, but mainly in the papillary layer of the dermis. The afferent axon is myelinated (diameter 1–2 μm). The Ruffini corpuscles are mainly located at the border between the tunica albuginea and the dermis or are arranged in groups inside the tunica albuginea. The supplying myelinated axon measures 3–5 μm in diameter. The genital corpuscles are located in the papillary layer of the dermis as well as in the deep dermis. They vary in size between 200 and 900 μm. The supplying myelinated axon measures 4–6 μm in diameter. Neither Meissner corpuscles nor typical Pacini corpuscles were observed in the glans penis.
