Some Aspects of Lyotropic Liquid Crystals

Abstract

We present in this review our most recent results in the field of Lyotropic Liquiid Crystals as well as related literature studies. The first part deals with diffusion of water in different Lyotropic mesophases which have been investigated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques. Data concerning systems such as the Lα, and Hα mesophases obtained from binary mixtures of Potassium Palmitate (KP) and water and those obtained from a ternary mixture of Potassium Palmitate, Potassium Laurate (KL) and water, giving Ribbon (RBα) mesophase, will be presented. The main purpose of such studies was to provide a deeper understanding of factors which determine the mobility of water in Lyotropic Liquid Crystals. Together with such studies of microscopic properties we have been interested in the investigation of properties at macroscopic level.
