Abstract

The recognition that intellectual functioning and developmental level are valid measures in autism was one of the major steps in the field during the late 1960s (Schopler, 1976, 1982). Intellectual level can be assessed in autistic children; to a great extent, it has an equivalent meaning for children with autism as it has for other handicapped people (Rutter & Schopler, 1987). IQ has been shown to be related to outcome in autistic persons; it is associated with the acquisition of a variety of different kinds of skills (Lotter, 1974; Rutter, 1985). A nonverbal intelligence test is now an essential part of any assessment of an autistic child or adolescent (Parks, 1983).
