Abstract

Few detailed measurements of the angular scattering characteristics of phytoplankton have been made because of the practical difficulties in measuring scattering at very narrow angles, within a few degrees of the forward direction, and because of the prohibitive cost of off-the-shelf instrumentation. However, such measurements are required for many remote sensing applications and for resolving discrepancies between predicted and measured absorption characteristics. We describe here the construction and performance of a volume scattering device for measuring the volume-scattering characteristics of microalgal cells between 0° and 180°.
